Annual Picnic Set for June 15th

The Canandaigua Lake Chapter TU Annual Picnic is Monday, June 15th; 630pm at the Powderhorn Lodge in Powder Mills Park, Pittsford, NY.  You may fish in the Park or other nearby sections of Irondequoit Creek beginning at 3pm.  Brown trout are stocked periodically in theses waters,  which are close to the picnic area.  Bring your gear and enjoy!  Catch and release only.

The Chapter will supply hots, hamburgers, cheeseburgers and beverages. Please bring a dish to share: We need chip and dip, veggies and dip, salads (potato, green, fruit, pasta), baked beans, or a dessert.  Please e-mail Dick Steinheider at steinheide@aol.com or call 585/381-9404 to RSVP and let us know what you can bring.  You should also bring your own silverware to enjoy the tasty treats!  A lawn chair might also be a good idea.

Powder Mills Park is located off Route 96, near Bushnell's Basin.  A web page with directions, etc. can be seen with a click here.

Wives or girl friends (but not both, unless you are daring) and guests are always very welcome.

This is a great event and always lots of fun.  Plus the food is great!

We will have our usual raffle during the picnic.
So . . . Remember to bring dollars or flies!

Brook Trout Facts

Brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) are the only trout native to much of the eastern United States. Arguably the most beautiful freshwater fish, brook trout survive in only the coldest and cleanest water. Brook trout serve as indicators of the health of the watersheds they inhabit. Strong wild brook trout populations demonstrate that stream or river ecosystem is healthy and that water quality is excellent. A decline in brook trout populations can serve as an early warning that the health of an entire aquatic system is at risk.

In 2005, in recognition of the need to address regional and range-wide threats to brook trout, a group of public and private entities formed the Eastern Brook Trout Joint Venture (EBTJV) to halt the decline of brook trout and restore fishable populations. Trout Unlimited’s Conservation Success Index (CSI) combines brook trout population data generated from the Eastern Brook Trout Joint Venture, and many other types of landscape information that evaluate the habitat integrity and future security of that land. The CSI scores the subwatersheds, or lands typically containing 25 to 75 miles of streams, where brook trout historically survived. Steve Coleman

The CSI provides a host of maps that illustrate the status of brook trout and their habitat across the Eastern brook trout range – from Maine to Georgia to Ohio. An interactive mapping tool allows you to use Google Earth or Google Maps to fly around all New England states and examine specific subwatersheds in our region.

TU staff, TU chapters and their partners are using the CSI to prioritize areas for brook trout protection, restoration, reintroduction and education across the East.

Prez sez . . Travel Adventures

Over the next several months the Chapter has a lot of work to do to be ready for the Cohocton River restoration project. Did you know that our Chapter was the only Chapter in New York State to receive a grant from TU National? Currently scheduled for early August, we need to line up help and assistance as well as be fully organized and ready to go. A significant amount of time and energy is necessary for this project to be successful. WE NEED YOU COMMITTMENT AND HELP. This will be a fun project; sure there is "work" involved, but the fun and rewards will far outweigh a little sweat. Please let us know that you are interested. The project was well received when first introduced. Now we need to correctly plan for August. Here is a direct link to the web page that will "sign you up". We can also keep you posted on all phases of the project and it's schedules. Hey, if you know a group that might like to help, please contact Al Kraus. Thanks.

Would you like to help out with some of our projects, at meetings, be on the Board? Now would be a good time to step forward. Give me a call (585/360-1812) if you would like any information or I can answer a question or concern. And on another matter, we are looking for meeting ideas. Again, call me or send an email (jpc@travela.com) to me.

And don't forget the picnic. We always have a great time and every year wonder why more folks don't join in. If you have not been to a TU picnic, try this one. Very enjoyable; and the food is always great. Please call Dick Steinheider so that we can plan correctly. You will not be disappointed.

I'm goin' fishin'.

Notes from the April 2009 Meeting

Al Kraus, Chapter Secretary, brought the meeting to order and welcomed everyone.

Dockside.netAl indicated the Chapter was moving forward to clean-up/restore five miles of the Cohocton River, on the 1st and 2nd of August 2009.   Although we have decided to continue with this important conservation project more volunteers are sorely needed.  All Chapter members were asked to try to donate at least one day to this project, and to try to recruit family members, friends, and other groups to participate.  Prospective volunteers can get further information and sign-up to help at the Chapter web site, at www.canandaigualaketu.org. Questions can be directed to Al at krausengr@earthlink.net.

Al thanked everyone who helped with float stocking the Cohocton River during the Spring of 2009.  A lot of nice Browns were put in the river and the fly fishing down there has been great for the past several weeks.

Jerry Luzum reported that he was approached about whether or not the Chapter would be willing to start helping with the stocking program at Irondequoit Creek.  They currently bucket stock the creek two days every year.  Jerry indicated Jean Chaintreuil has agreed to take the lead for the Chapter to complete this mission.

Al next turned the meeting over to Dave Morrow who first announced that the Chapter would be once again sending two young people to the Catskill Fly Fishing School in July.  Anyone wanting to recommend a participant should contact Dave at p3orion@frontiernet.net. Dave also indicated that the Chapter would once again be supporting the Canandaigua Lake Trout Derby by helping to man the weigh station at the north end of the lake on 6 and 7 June.  Monies earned by conducting the derby go to supporting the Camp Good Days Program and Mercy Flight; normally both of these non-profit organizations are given about $4000 each year.   Anyone wanting to volunteer to help should contact Dave at p3orion@frontiernet.net.

Aberle Eye CareThe meeting was then turned over to Jean Chaintreuil who conducted the regular raffle, which is held each meeting.  Several members won various prizes: cash, flies, and donated fly-fishing goodies.

Jean also announced that the June meeting will be the Chapter Annual Picnic.  This year the picnic will be held at 3:00 PM on 15 June, at Powder Mills Park.  More information regarding the picnic will be posted on the Chapter web site.

Jean adjourned the business meeting and turned the meeting over to Mark Donahue who introduced Kevin Kram, who gave an excellent talk and demonstration on the art of fly casting. ~~ Al Kraus
