Fly Fishing Ediquette
I have heard people say that they don't care how other people view them. Well, regardless of this, it is very important that all anglers follow some common courtesy rules so that these resources continue to be available to us.
The following are some basic rules of etiquette while fly fishing:
1. Obey all state and local fishing laws and rules.
2. Always recognize property rights. Always ask permission first. Leave all gates as you found them. Public waters are disappearing quickly and we must show the utmost respect to the property owners to show we are gentlemen.
3. Do not litter. If you brought it in, take it out (even leaders). If you change a leader, spool it up and put it in a vest pocket to be thrown away later. Leave the area cleaner than you found it.
4. Wade only when necessary. The aquatic life is crucial to the trout's survival.
5. Strive to not leave any marks or tracks whenever possible.
6. Do not enter the water anywhere near an angler who is already in the water. A section of water belongs to the first person fishing it. It is inconsiderate to crowd an angler who was there first. One of the only times this may be a problem is when fishing a crowded Steelhead run like in the Great Lakes region.
7. A stationary angler has every right to remain where he/she is for as long as they want. If you are working your way toward them, exit the stream and quietly walk around them.
8. If a nearby angler has a fish on, yield to that person and if necessary, lend a helping hand by offering to net the fish, etc.
9. Never light a fire.
10. Use common sense.
I believe fly fishing is the most rewarding sport there is to those who truly understand and embrace it. It can be a time for complete solitude and reflection, a means of stress/tension reduction from the rigors of the daily grind or a time of fellowship with friends and/or family. ~~ Unknown

Notes from the February 2010 Meeting
Jean Chaintreuil (Chapter President) brought the meeting to order and welcomed everyone. Visitors were invited to introduce themselves; a few visitors stood up to say hello. Jean sent around an “Attendance Record” for everyone to sign.
Jean indicated that anyone wanting to join the Chapter and participate in our events should contact Norm Brust at nbrust@rochester.rr.com. Information about the Chapter can be found at www.canandaigualaketu.org .
Jean asked if there were any fishing reports. None were provided.
Brian Pitre reported that the Chapter was working to get underway with its support for the VA Healing Waters Program. Anyone wanting to get involved should go to the Chapter’s web site to sign up to help with this important initiative. If you do go to the web site, please keep in mind that there is a “double opt” in process…after signing up to help you will get a message asking you to confirm that you want to participate by click in the appropriate place on the screen. If you do not complete this requirement you will not be added to list of helpers/mentors.
Jerry Luzum indicated that the Chapter’s Fly Tying School was going well and that there were 19 students. A few more mentors are needed, so Jerry sent around a sign-up sheet for additional members who were willing to help out by being assistant instructors.
Jean reported that the Simms shirts members ordered where still on backorder. Efforts are on-going to try to resolve the bottlenecks and get the shirts in as soon as possible.
Jean indicated that the 3rd Annual Guys, Flies & Pies would be held on February 20th at the North Greece Fire Department, Field Pavilion, 3666 Latta Road. This will be a great night of fly tying, pizza, and door prizes.
Jim Cantin reported that the Chapter planned to conduct a Fly Fishing School this year, on 24 April at Onanda Park. The cost will be $55 and the program will go from about 9 AM to 3 PM. Jim indicated he would send around an instructor sign-up sheet during the next meeting.
The regular raffle, which is held each meeting, was conducted. Several members won various prizes: cash, flies, and donated fly-fishing goodies.
Jean announced that the main speaker during the March 15th meeting will be Web Pearsall from the DEC. Web will talk about the “state” of the DEC within this portion of New York State.
Jean adjourned the business meeting and introduced Dave Eveland, who gave a presentation about fly fishing at West Canada Creek.
