Conservation Updates

On May 16th a few chapter members, and a volunteer from a neighboring chapter, worked on the Parks Rd. section of the upper Cohocton river.  This section has very successful older tree plantings done by our chapter perhaps 10(?) years ago.  The trees have done so well that they had begun to outgrow their protective stakes and fencing.  While the stakes and galvanized fencing certainly did their job to protect them in their infancy, it was simply time to set these trees free as these protections were starting to inhibit further growth of the trees.  It was a very gratifying to see how far these trees had come and the fruits of the chapter's efforts over the years.  There are other sections of plantings on the river where we will be addressing this same issue so keep an eye out for further volunteer events.

The distinct and excessive turbidity that some of us have noticed that seems to occur below the village of Cohocton on the river at times has been reported to the DEC.  Behind the scenes this has evolved into a "Turbidity Monitoring" group consisting of a few of our members along with Pete Austerman of the DEC, retired biologist Bill Abraham, and Kyle Glenn of Northeast TU.  We will continue to keep an eye on this situation to help identify and alleviate unnecessary siltation in the river.  It is also a reminder if you see things out of place while on our waterways, it doesn't hurt to bring it to the attention of our chapter or the DEC.

A recent opening of an additional section of Public Fishing Rights along with an angler parking lot has been completed on the upper Cohocton river off Route 21.  The new section of stream rights will now fill a gap in access from the RT. 21 bridge downstream to existing stream rights.  I really would like to recognize some of the players involved in making this happen.  While retired biologist Bill Abraham and current biologist Pete Austerman had some initial involvement, they made it clear to me that they wanted to give credit to Dan Mulhall (Region 8 Fisheries Technician) and the Region 8 Real Property staff for the great job to get the acquisition completed.  The Region 8 Operations staff from the Naples Shop worked on constructing the lot which is so very welcome!
