Trout in the classroom connects students with their watershed

Trout Unlimited’s environmental education program is a gateway stewardship experience for students. It fosters a new generation of advocates for salmonids and the watersheds in which they live.

PARTNERSHIP.

"The Canandaigua Lake Chapter of Trout Unlimited has graciously donated the materials for high school students to grow Brown Trout in the classroom this year. Trout in the Classroom enhances science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics curriculums.

Students study and raise trout from eggs to fingerlings (small fish) in a Coldwater aquarium during the school year. It is a unique opportunity used to teach the relevance of watersheds, while also teaching nutrient cycles, biological adaptations and multicellular organism development.”

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

“Our program at Marcus Whitman will include students in grades 9-12, with emphasis on living environment and our environmental science classes where students will be responsible for
observations, water testing, cleaning and habitat management. It culminates with a field trip to a community stream where the trout will be released. Most likely location at this point is Naples Creek, however it will need to be an approved location by the Department of Environmental Conservation.

The program begins with assembling an aquarium system to host hundreds of trout eggs. Our aquarium and filter setup were donated by a parent in the district. The rest of our materials, including a chiller to keep the tank at 57 degrees, powerhead, test kits and nets were graciously donated by the Canandaigua Lake Chapter of Trout Unlimited. This was quite an investment by the chapter, to help offset the cost please consider donating to Canandaigua Lake Trout Unlimited to support this project.

Over the course of the next few months, students witness the trout or life cycle and as their fish grow, so does their care for the trout and their environment. This care translates into a deep understanding and connection to the watershed systems on which all life depends.
